Xavier Niel is a French billionaire businessman, investor, and entrepreneur, best known as the founder and majority shareholder of the French telecommunications company Iliad. Born in 1967 in Créteil, France, Niel began his foray into technology at a young age, developing Minitel services—an early precursor to the internet—while still in his teens. This early experience in digital services provided him with the foundation for his future ventures in telecommunications and technology infrastructure.
Niel gained significant traction in the late 1990s when he founded Iliad, the parent company of the internet service provider Free. Through a strategy of offering low-cost, high-speed broadband to the French market, he disrupted the national telecommunications industry, forcing competitors to lower their own prices. His business model focused on self-built equipment and aggressive innovation, which helped establish Free as a dominant player in the European ISP market.
Beyond his work with Iliad, Niel has become a prolific investor through his investment vehicle, Kima Ventures. He is also a prominent figure in the French tech scene, having founded École 42, a tuition-free, peer-to-peer computer programming school. His commitment to fostering entrepreneurship led him to create Station F in Paris, which currently stands as one of the world's largest startup campuses, hosting thousands of early-stage businesses.
Today, Niel remains one of the most influential figures in the telecommunications and tech venture sectors. With a reported net worth of approximately $15 billion, he maintains a significant stake in various international telecom assets, including operations in Italy and Poland. Despite his immense wealth, Niel is widely recognized for his hands-on approach to business and his continued efforts to advance the digital economy through education and infrastructure investment.
