Jan Koum is a Ukrainian-born American entrepreneur who co-founded the messaging platform WhatsApp. Born in 1976 in Kyiv, Ukraine, Koum emigrated to the United States with his mother at the age of 16, settling in Mountain View, California. During his youth, he worked as a cleaner at a grocery store to help support his family while his mother worked as a babysitter. He later enrolled at San Jose State University but eventually dropped out to pursue professional opportunities in the burgeoning technology sector.
Koum began his career working as a security and infrastructure engineer at Yahoo, where he spent nine years. During his tenure at the company, he met Brian Acton, who would later become his co-founder. In 2007, Koum left Yahoo to explore new ventures. After purchasing an iPhone, he recognized the potential of the then-nascent App Store and began formulating the concept for a messaging application that prioritized privacy and simplicity, distinct from the cluttered SMS systems and social networks of the era.
In 2009, Koum officially founded WhatsApp Inc. on his birthday. The early versions of the application focused on showing status updates, but it quickly evolved into a messaging service after Apple introduced push notifications. By eschewing advertisements and keeping the user interface clean and minimal, the platform gained massive international traction. Koum served as the CEO and lead developer, overseeing the company as it grew to hundreds of millions of daily users across the globe.
In 2014, Facebook, now known as Meta Platforms, acquired WhatsApp for approximately 19 billion dollars in a combination of cash and stock. This transaction marked one of the largest acquisitions in the history of the technology industry. Following the deal, Koum joined the Facebook board of directors, continuing to lead WhatsApp as an independent entity until his departure from the company in 2018.
Today, Jan Koum remains a prominent figure in the technology world and a significant philanthropist. His estimated net worth of 17 billion dollars stems largely from his stake in the company he founded and subsequent investments. He is known for maintaining a relatively private lifestyle and has dedicated substantial portions of his wealth to various charitable causes, including significant donations to organizations focused on education and medical research.
