Tobi Lütke is a German-Canadian entrepreneur who serves as the founder and chief executive officer of the e-commerce giant Shopify. Born in 1980 in Germany, Lütke developed an early passion for computer programming and hacking. He dropped out of high school in Germany to pursue a professional apprenticeship as a computer programmer at Siemens, which provided him with a practical, technical foundation that would later prove essential in building his own technology stack.
After moving to Canada, Lütke attempted to start an online store for snowboarding equipment called Snowdevil in 2004. Frustrated by the lack of flexible e-commerce software available at the time, he decided to build his own platform using the Ruby on Rails framework. This project shifted his focus from retail to software development, as he realized that the technology he created had the potential to solve a massive problem for other online merchants.
In 2006, he co-founded Shopify along with Scott Lake and Daniel Weinand. The platform was designed to make e-commerce accessible to entrepreneurs who lacked the technical resources to build their own systems from scratch. Shopify rapidly grew into a dominant force in the digital economy, providing the infrastructure for millions of businesses to sell their products globally. The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2015, marking a significant milestone for the Canadian technology sector.
Lütke’s leadership philosophy emphasizes developer culture and long-term product vision. He has often spoken about the importance of mission-driven growth and fostering a creative, engineer-centric work environment at Shopify. His ability to scale the company through various market shifts—including the massive surge in e-commerce demand during the COVID-19 pandemic—solidified his reputation as one of the most influential software entrepreneurs of his generation.
Today, Lütke continues to guide Shopify as it evolves into a comprehensive platform encompassing payments, marketing, and logistics. He remains a key figure in the global technology industry and is known for his advocacy of open-source development and entrepreneurship. With his significant stake in the company and the continued expansion of its digital ecosystem, his net worth is reported to be approximately $15 billion, reflecting his enduring impact on the modern retail landscape.
