Rishi Sunak is a British politician who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2022 to 2024. Born in Southampton to parents who migrated from East Africa, Sunak was educated at Winchester College and later studied at Oxford University and Stanford University. Before entering politics, he built a successful career in the financial sector, working as an analyst at Goldman Sachs and later as a partner at hedge funds including the Children’s Investment Fund Management. This period of his professional life allowed him to gain significant experience in international finance and capital markets.
Sunak transitioned into public service in 2015 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Richmond in North Yorkshire. His rise through the Conservative Party was rapid; he held various junior ministerial positions before being appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 2019. In 2020, he was promoted to Chancellor of the Exchequer. During his time as Chancellor, he gained national prominence for overseeing the government's economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the implementation of the Job Retention Scheme, which provided financial support to millions of citizens during mandated lockdowns.
Following his resignation as Chancellor in 2022, which contributed to the collapse of the Boris Johnson administration, Sunak campaigned for the leadership of the Conservative Party. After an initial unsuccessful bid, he was elected leader and subsequently became Prime Minister in October 2022. His premiership was defined by efforts to stabilize the British economy, address high inflation, and manage geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and diplomatic relations with international partners.
Sunak’s background in finance, combined with his family’s business interests, has consistently made him a subject of public interest regarding his wealth, which has been reported at approximately $800 million. Following the 2024 general election, where the Conservative Party lost its parliamentary majority, Sunak announced his intention to step down as party leader. He remains a member of Parliament and continues to be a notable figure in British political discourse, reflecting on the challenges and successes of his tenure as head of government and his previous economic policy work.
