Michael Saul Dell was born on February 23, 1965, in Houston, Texas. Displaying an early interest in technology and entrepreneurship, he demonstrated a talent for business while still in school. At the age of 15, he disassembled an Apple II computer to understand its internal components, setting the stage for his future career. He briefly attended the University of Texas at Austin as a pre-med student, but his passion for computers soon took precedence over his academic studies.
In 1984, while living in a campus dormitory, Dell founded PCs Limited with a startup capital of 1,000 dollars. His breakthrough business model involved selling custom-built personal computers directly to consumers, bypassing the retail markup that was standard in the industry at the time. By assembling machines to order and shipping them directly to the buyer, he was able to offer lower prices and better customer service. The venture proved immediately successful, and he dropped out of college at age 19 to focus on the company full-time.
The wealth of Michael Dell was built primarily through the explosive growth of his company, which was renamed Dell Computer Corporation in 1988. As the personal computer market expanded throughout the 1990s, the company leveraged its efficient direct-sales model and sophisticated supply chain management to become a dominant global player. In 1988, the company held its initial public offering, and by the end of the decade, it had become the largest PC manufacturer in the world. Dell pioneered the use of the internet for sales, launching dell.com in 1996 and rapidly scaling online revenue.
A key milestone occurred in 2013, when Michael Dell took the company private in a 25 billion dollar deal, a move intended to restructure the business away from the scrutiny of public markets. This allowed the company to pivot toward enterprise solutions, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. In 2016, Dell completed the acquisition of EMC Corporation for approximately 67 billion dollars, which was the largest technology acquisition in history at the time. This merger significantly expanded the company’s portfolio, enabling it to provide comprehensive data storage and infrastructure services to large corporations.
Today, the company operates as Dell Technologies, a diversified firm that remains a pillar of the global tech industry. Michael Dell continues to serve as the chairman and chief executive officer of the organization. Beyond his corporate leadership, he and his wife, Susan Dell, operate the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, which focuses on education and health initiatives for children living in urban poverty. As of 2024, Michael Dell is recognized as one of the wealthiest individuals in the world, with a reported net worth of approximately 150 billion dollars, reflecting his long-standing influence on the computing industry and his successful navigation of multiple technological shifts over the past four decades.
