Lawrence Joseph Ellison was born in New York City in 1944 and was raised by his aunt and uncle in Chicago. He attended the University of Illinois and the University of Chicago but did not graduate from either institution. In his early twenties, he relocated to California, where he spent several years working as a computer programmer for various companies, including Amdahl Corporation and Ampex.
The turning point in Ellison's career occurred in 1977 when he co-founded Software Development Laboratories alongside Bob Miner and Ed Oates. The company was founded on a contract to build a database management system for the CIA, which they named Oracle. The software's ability to implement the relational database model proposed by Edgar Codd became the cornerstone of the company's long-term commercial success.
Ellison's wealth is primarily derived from his significant stake in Oracle Corporation, the enterprise software giant he steered for over four decades. As the company grew, he oversaw strategic acquisitions, most notably the purchase of Sun Microsystems in 2010. These moves allowed Oracle to transition from a pure software provider into a comprehensive hardware and cloud services powerhouse.
Beyond his corporate pursuits, Ellison has maintained a portfolio of high-profile investments. He holds a massive real estate footprint, including approximately 98 percent of the Hawaiian island of Lanai. He is also recognized for his interest in yachting, having founded the Oracle Team USA racing syndicate, which secured two America's Cup titles.
Currently, Ellison serves as the Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of Oracle. With a reported net worth of approximately $185 billion, he remains one of the world's wealthiest individuals. He continues to influence the technological landscape, particularly through Oracle's expansion into cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence, while managing his extensive philanthropic and private interests.
