Jeffrey Preston Bezos was born on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Raised in Houston and Miami, he demonstrated an early aptitude for science and technology, eventually graduating summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1986 with degrees in electrical engineering and computer science. Before founding his own company, Bezos held various positions in the financial sector, including at the investment firm D.E. Shaw & Co., where he became a senior vice president.
In 1994, Bezos moved to Seattle and founded Amazon.com, originally an online bookstore, operating out of his garage. The company rapidly expanded its product offerings to include a vast array of consumer goods. Bezos took Amazon public in 1997, marking the beginning of its transformation into a global e-commerce juggernaut. His strategy focused on long-term market dominance and aggressive reinvestment of profits into logistics and new business lines.
A significant milestone in his professional trajectory was the launch of Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2006, which revolutionized the cloud computing industry and became a primary driver of the company’s profitability. Beyond Amazon, Bezos founded the aerospace company Blue Origin in 2000, aiming to make space travel more accessible through reusable launch vehicles. He also acquired The Washington Post in 2013, solidifying his influence in the media landscape.
Jeff Bezos served as Amazon's CEO until July 2021, when he transitioned to the role of Executive Chairman. His wealth is derived primarily from his significant equity stake in Amazon, which has experienced substantial growth over the past three decades. With a reported net worth of $285 billion, he remains one of the wealthiest individuals in the world, dedicating much of his post-CEO time to his space exploration ventures and philanthropic efforts through the Bezos Earth Fund.
