William Henry Gates III was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington. He showed an early aptitude for computer programming at the Lakeside School, where he gained access to a mainframe computer. During his teenage years, he co-founded a small business called Traf-O-Data with his friend Paul Allen. He later enrolled at Harvard University in 1973 but withdrew two years later to pursue the commercial development of the Altair 8800 BASIC interpreter.
In 1975, Gates and Allen co-founded Microsoft. The company achieved a pivotal breakthrough when it secured a contract with IBM in 1980 to provide the operating system for their personal computer. The success of MS-DOS, and subsequently the Windows graphical user interface, propelled Microsoft to a dominant market position throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Gates served as the company’s chairman, CEO, and chief software architect, overseeing the rapid proliferation of PC technology globally.
Gates stepped down as the chief executive of Microsoft in 2000, eventually leaving his full-time role at the company in 2008 to dedicate his attention to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Founded in 2000, the foundation has become one of the largest private charitable organizations in the world, focusing on global health, poverty reduction, and educational initiatives. He has been instrumental in funding global vaccination programs and agricultural development research.
Currently, Gates holds a diverse portfolio of investments across energy, technology, and agriculture. His reported net worth is approximately 105 billion dollars, reflecting his long-standing status as a major shareholder in technology firms and various other enterprises. He remains a prominent global advocate for climate change solutions and public health, often leveraging his platform to influence policy and research in these sectors.
