O'Shea Jackson, known professionally as Ice Cube, was born on June 15, 1969, in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in the South Central neighborhood of Los Angeles, where he began writing raps while attending William Howard Taft High School. After graduation, he pursued architectural drafting at the Phoenix Institute of Technology before fully committing to his musical interests. His early background in the local hip-hop scene helped him develop the rhythmic and storytelling skills that would define his later work.
Ice Cube experienced his first major career breakthrough as a member of the influential gangsta rap group N.W.A. alongside Dr. Dre and Eazy-E. He wrote many of the lyrics for the group’s debut album, Straight Outta Compton, which remains a landmark in hip-hop history. His departure from the group in 1989 due to royalty disputes led to a successful solo career with his debut album, AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted. His lyrical depth and social commentary earned him widespread critical acclaim and established him as a powerful voice in music.
His transition into filmmaking significantly expanded his influence and revenue streams. In 1995, he wrote and starred in the comedy film Friday, which became a surprise box-office success and spawned a lucrative franchise. He further solidified his standing in Hollywood by starring in successful projects like the Barbershop series and the 21 Jump Street films. Beyond acting, he founded the Cube Vision production company, which has been responsible for producing numerous high-grossing films including Straight Outta Compton, the 2015 biopic about his former group.
Ice Cube’s business acumen extends into sports and media, notably founding the BIG3, a professional 3-on-3 basketball league that launched in 2017. The league has attracted former NBA stars and established a unique niche in the sports entertainment industry. Through these diverse ventures, he has built an estimated net worth of $160 million. Today, he is widely regarded as a versatile entrepreneur who has successfully transitioned from a pioneering rapper to a formidable producer, actor, and business owner.
