Fred Ehrsam was born in 1988 and grew up in Concord, Massachusetts. He was a high-achieving student who gained early recognition for his skills in gaming and mathematics, eventually attending Duke University. At Duke, he earned a degree in computer science and economics, a dual background that proved instrumental in his future endeavors within the burgeoning world of digital assets and decentralized finance.
After graduating in 2010, Ehrsam began his professional career as a foreign exchange trader at Goldman Sachs in New York. While at the firm, he became fascinated by the potential of Bitcoin and the underlying blockchain technology. Recognizing that the barriers to entry for trading digital currencies were too high for the average user, he resigned from his position at Goldman Sachs to pursue the development of a user-friendly platform for cryptocurrency transactions.
In 2012, Ehrsam co-founded Coinbase alongside Brian Armstrong. The company aimed to provide a secure and simple interface for buying and selling Bitcoin, which was a novel concept at the time. As the company grew, Ehrsam served in various leadership roles, including as president, and was vital in steering the platform through its early regulatory and technical hurdles. His strategic vision helped Coinbase become the first major cryptocurrency exchange to go public on the Nasdaq in 2021.
Following his departure from an operational role at Coinbase in 2017, Ehrsam remained on the board of directors before co-founding Paradigm in 2018. Paradigm is a prominent investment firm focused on crypto-assets and blockchain technology. The firm has since become a major institutional force in the ecosystem, providing capital and research to startups that are building the infrastructure for Web3 and decentralized finance protocols.
Currently, Ehrsam is a prominent figure in the venture capital landscape, known for his deep technical knowledge of blockchain protocols. He continues to advocate for the maturation of the crypto sector through his work at Paradigm and his public commentary. His career reflects a transition from traditional financial markets to the vanguard of the digital asset industry, cementing his standing as a central architect of modern crypto finance.
